In April 1995, the Federal Building located in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was destroyed by a powerful bomb left in a rented vehicle. This tragedy took the lives of 168 people, injured 600 others and destroyed a nine-story building. Soon after the rescue efforts were completed, the balance of the building was demolished, the site was fenced, and a grass lawn was planted. This tragedy was so immense that traffic on 5th Street has been permanently closed and plans have been made to erect a memorial on the site.
